Our Kid's Program
| Great White Martial Arts gives kids exposure to two distinct styles of martial arts, Aikido and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Although these two martial arts systems are different, they are also similar in their use of getting a hold of the opponent in order to control them. The use of grappling is the primary method of defense, instead of punching and kicking. Your child will learn techniques that allow them to control a situation, without having to seriously hurt their opponent. There is no soft way to punch someone else in the face! |
 |
Aikido and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are different in how each system attempts to control the opponent. In Aikido, students learn how to compromise the opponent's balance and then "guide" them to the ground. In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, students learn to take the confrontation to the ground and then move into a position of leverage (control) over their opponent. Different philosophies, similar results. Techniques are taught using body movement, leverage, and joint lock giving the means to escape a difficult situation. Each martial art is taught independently, by experienced instructors who have each studied their respective arts for over a decade.
We teach kids in an encouraging, fun environment. We use games to introduce and practice skills needed for martial arts. Our program isn’t strictly a means of physical conditioning. We consider each class a means to build character. Parents are encouraged to get on the mat and work on the techniques with their children. The techniques will benefit parents as well and build a stronger relationship through a shared interest.
Why choose our school?
 |
Character Development: Students need more than self defense skills to advance through the ranks. Parents will regularly update the instructors as to whether the students are living up to a personal value system. When students perform extraordinary deeds outside of the dojo, they will be given a star on their belt. Students need at least 4 character stars in order to advance to the next belt.
Safety: Students are taught ukemi, techniques for controlled falling to protect themselves from injury. Our styles teach control of attackers with throws and joint locks, instead of punching or kicking. The techniques we practice together are the same as they would apply in real life. Our students are taught to avoid causing injury even off the mat.
Interpersonal Skills: We practice in a non-competitive format. Students work together to develop techniques. |
Costs: Enrollment is open, we do not lock in membership with contracts. We don’t have registration costs or hidden fees for organizations and rank testing. Students must cover the cost of the monthly membership and uniforms.
How is progress measured?
| There are 2 methods by which we measure our students progress, by character development and their ability to utilize the various self defense techniques. As previously mentioned, character stars are given out to students who perform extraordinary deeds as reported by their parents. In addition, students will be given stripes for a combination of class attendance and understanding of the techniques. In general, once a student has achieved 4 character stars and 4 stripes on their belt, they will be eligible to test for the next level of belt. Their are minimum age requirements for each belt as well. |

How often do the classes meet?
The Kid's classes are offered on Monday nights (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) and Thursday nights (Aikido). Classes start at 5:45PM and are approximately 60 minutes in length.
Is there an age minimum?
Although every kid's attention span varies, most 3 and 4 year olds will have trouble concentrating on one topic for 45-60 minutes. So, we recommend kids start their martial arts training when they enter school, at 5 years old.
How much does the program cost?
 |
Kid's participating on both nights will be charged $40 per month. Kid's participating on a single night will be charged $20 per month. However, we do encourage all students to participate both nights if possible. But we also understand that two nights a week is not always possible for all families. There are family discounts available as well. |
